Hi Ladies
The polyp is gone along with quite a bit of endometriosis that I didn't know I had!!! Had the op on 19th Jan
RA has been very active, so have started sulph again, I was taken off it about two years ago as I developed a rash. Along with docs have decided to try it again as RA not under control!!
Has anyone successfully conceived on this drug?
Thanks gals

Hello

I have a very healthy lively 17 month old son who was conceived whilst I was taking Sulphasalazine. I continued to take it throughout the pregnancy as I had miscarried twice because I had sticky blood due to RA so they were keen not to let me flare. They treated the sticky blood very easily with low dose aspirin. I also had regular steroid injections. Because Sulphasalazine is not licenced to take during pregnancy (although there are no known complications - it is an ethical thing about testing drugs on pregnant ladies) I was under a obstetritian from the moment I informed the Rheumatology dept I was pregnant. This isn't a bad thing as I had loads of ultrasound scans which was really nice (I only had the standard 2 before my daughter was born before I was diagnosed).

I was keen to breast feed so my consultant looked up sulphazalazine and breastfeeding. She said there was only 1 reported case of a child develpoing a rash which disappeared once breastfeeding ceased so I decided to give it a go. I breastfed him until he was 14 months (I had intended to stop when he was 12 months but it took longer than I had anticipated to persuade him to stop - I had to wait until my husband had a week off work and could put him to bed without me being there!)

Best of luck

Hi Becky
Thank you for your reply, that's really good to know.
Good news also about breastfeeding, I'm a Health Visitor so I support mums with this everyday!
Thanks again

hiya, i just wanted to add that i'm currently 15 weeks pregnant and conceived on sulphasalazine. i take sulpha and hydroxychloroquine. i've got a ra appt on the 1st and will be asking about coming off hydroxy so i can breastfeed. i guess i'll stay on the sulpha as i've heard that is fine. i'm also worried about coming off everything as i don't want to flare after birth. i can update after my appt?

Hi,

I am not too sure if anyone looks in this thread anymore but just to say that whilst I have always come off the meds before conceiving, I am currently nursing my baby girl whilst on Sulpha and Hydro....

I am not 100% happy with this however I probably would not have nearly reached a whole year without them and the steriod injections I have been having.

My rheumy EVEN queried the possibility of me nursing whilst on MTX but we've decided not to do that and continue TRYING to wean baby Grace!

I was off MTX for just three mths when I fell pregnant.

No probs, I am sure the medical profession cover themselves enormously with all these drugs.
